About this course
Most equality training teaches the nine protected characteristics and stops, which is the least useful part, because almost nobody discriminates on purpose.
This course covers where discrimination actually happens at work: recruitment decisions, rotas and shift patterns, banter, reasonable adjustments that were never made, and the manager who treats a disability related absence as a conduct problem.
What you will be able to do
- Name the nine protected characteristics and four forms of prohibited conduct
- Recognise indirect discrimination in a rota or a policy
- Apply the duty to make reasonable adjustments
- Challenge behaviour proportionately and know when it becomes a formal matter
Modules
Assessment and certificate
A knowledge check and a final assessment at 80 per cent, unlimited attempts.
A free digital certificate with a verification code and 1.5 CPD hours.
Questions
Is banter really harassment?
It can be. Harassment is unwanted conduct related to a protected characteristic that violates dignity or creates a degrading, humiliating or offensive environment. The test is the effect on the person, considered reasonably, not the intention of the speaker. It is not a defence that everyone laughed.
Does an employee have to prove their disability before I make an adjustment?
The duty arises when you know, or could reasonably be expected to know, that someone is disabled and at a substantial disadvantage. Waiting for formal proof before considering an adjustment is a common and expensive mistake.
