CPD and mandatory training for registered nurses

For nurses and nursing associates on the NMC register, in any setting.

  • 9subjects on the list

A registered nurse carries two training obligations at once. The employer's mandatory training matrix, much of it shared with support staff, and the NMC's revalidation cycle: 450 practice hours, 35 hours of CPD of which 20 must be participatory, five reflective accounts and the rest, every three years.

The subjects below serve both. Every course adds verifiable hours to your CPD record, and the revalidation toolkit turns the NMC's requirements from a source of background dread into a plan. If revalidation is what brought you here, start with the free revalidation planner.

Questions

Do these courses count towards my 35 CPD hours?

Yes, as individual learning hours: each completed course adds its declared hours to your CPD record with a verifiable certificate. Twenty of your 35 hours must be participatory, meaning learning with others: discussing what you learned here with colleagues, or presenting it at a team session, is the standard way to convert individual study into participatory hours, and the revalidation toolkit shows exactly how to log it.

What counts as participatory CPD?

Learning that involves interaction with other professionals: clinical supervision groups, case discussions, journal clubs, conferences, teaching a session yourself. Reading and e-learning alone are individual hours. The NMC cares that the interaction happened and that you can evidence it; the toolkit's templates cover the evidencing.
