About this course
Regulation 18 requires providers to give staff appropriate support, supervision and appraisal. Most services do supervision, and most of it is a form being filled in while both people wish they were somewhere else.
This course teaches supervision that actually changes practice, and then the harder half: raising a performance concern early, when it is still a conversation, rather than late, when it has become a process.
What you will be able to do
- Run a supervision session that produces a decision rather than a form
- Give feedback about behaviour rather than character
- Raise a performance concern early and proportionately
- Recognise when a performance issue is actually a capability, health or safeguarding issue

Questions
How often should supervision happen?
There is no single legal frequency. Skills for Care guidance and most service policies work to every six to eight weeks, with an annual appraisal. What matters more to an inspector is that it happens, is recorded, and produces actions that are followed up.
Is supervision the same as an appraisal?
No. Supervision is regular, developmental and forward looking. Appraisal is usually annual and reviews the whole period. Using supervision as a mini appraisal is why so many staff experience it as being marked.
