About this course

The Care Certificate is the agreed set of 15 standards that health and social care support workers in England should be assessed against during induction. It was introduced in 2015 following the Cavendish Review, which found that new workers were being sent to care for people with almost no preparation.

This course teaches the knowledge behind all 15 standards in full. It is not a shortcut and it is not a tick box. Each standard is taught the way a good practice educator would teach it: what the rule is, where it comes from in law, what it looks like at three in the morning when you are short staffed, and what happens when it goes wrong.

One thing must be said plainly. The Care Certificate cannot be completed online alone. Its assessment is deliberately split between knowledge, which you can learn here, and observed competence in the workplace, which must be assessed by your employer's assessor watching you work. Any provider that sells you a Care Certificate without workplace observation is selling you something that will not stand up. We give you the knowledge, the evidence of your learning, and a workbook to take to your assessor.

Assessment and certificate

A knowledge check at the end of each of the 15 standards, then a final assessment across all of them. The pass mark is 80 per cent and attempts are unlimited, because the purpose is learning rather than gatekeeping. Every attempt is recorded on your account so that an employer or an inspector can see the full history.

A free digital certificate of knowledge, with a verification code any employer can check at learn.wajd.co.uk/verify, plus 12 CPD hours added to your record. This certificate evidences knowledge only. Your employer's assessor must still sign off the observed practice elements before your Care Certificate is complete.

Questions

Is the Care Certificate a qualification?

No. The Care Certificate is an employer led set of induction standards, not a regulated qualification. Since September 2024 there has also been a regulated qualification covering the same ground, the Level 2 Adult Social Care Certificate, which does sit on the RQF and is delivered by approved centres.

Can I complete the whole Care Certificate on this site?

You can complete all of the knowledge, and we give you a certificate and a workbook evidencing it. You cannot complete the observed practice elements online, here or anywhere else, because they must be assessed by someone watching you work. Any provider claiming otherwise is not being straight with you.

Does my Care Certificate transfer if I change employer?

There is no national register, so in practice it depends on your new employer. Most will accept a completed Care Certificate portfolio but many will want to reassess the practical elements themselves. Keep your portfolio and your certificates.

How long should it take?

The knowledge in this course is about 12 hours of study. Skills for Care suggest the full Care Certificate, including workplace assessment, is normally completed within 12 weeks of starting.

Why is this free?

Because the people who most need it are the lowest paid workers in the country, and charging them for induction knowledge is indefensible. The learning and the digital certificate are free forever. We charge only for optional extras such as a printed and posted certificate.
