About this course

Revalidation is how you renew your registration with the Nursing and Midwifery Council every three years. The requirements are fixed and public, and none of them are difficult on their own. What makes revalidation stressful is leaving it late and then discovering that reflective accounts are harder to write than they look.

This course covers all eight requirements accurately, then spends most of its time on the two things registrants actually struggle with: writing reflective accounts that demonstrate changed practice, and collecting feedback and confirmation without a last minute scramble.

We are also straight with you about something the sector is not. The hours you complete here on your own are non participatory CPD. Anyone selling you participatory hours for a solitary online course is misrepresenting the NMC requirement, and we will not do that.

Assessment and certificate

A knowledge check after each module and a final assessment. The pass mark is 80 per cent with unlimited attempts. Your completion is logged with dates so it can be entered directly into your CPD record.

A free digital certificate showing 2 CPD hours, recorded as non participatory learning, with a verification code. The hours are declared honestly: if you go on to discuss this material with colleagues, record that discussion separately as participatory.

Questions

Does this course give me participatory CPD hours?

No. Completing an online module on your own is non participatory CPD by the NMC's own definition, which turns on interaction with other professionals. If you discuss this material at a team meeting, in supervision or at a journal club, that discussion is participatory and you record it separately.

Can a provider be NMC approved or NMC accredited?

No. The NMC does not accredit CPD providers or courses. Any provider claiming to be NMC approved is misrepresenting the position. What matters is whether the learning is relevant to your practice and whether you can evidence it.

How many practice hours do I need?

450 over three years for a single registration. 900 if you are renewing as both a nurse and a midwife. Practice hours are broader than clinical shifts and can include management, education and research roles where you use your professional skills.

Does my confirmer have to be a nurse?

No. The NMC recommend your line manager where you have one, whether or not they are a registrant. Your reflective discussion partner, however, must be an NMC registrant.

What if I miss my renewal date?

Your registration lapses and you cannot practise as a registered nurse, midwife or nursing associate. Contact the NMC before your date if you are in difficulty, because extensions in exceptional circumstances are far easier to arrange in advance.
