About this course

Violence and aggression towards health and care staff is common and under reported. Most of it is not malice: it is fear, pain, confusion, frustration at waiting, intoxication, or a person who has lost control of everything else in their life.

That is not an excuse, and this course does not ask you to accept being assaulted. It is an explanation, and explanations are what let you intervene early enough to change the outcome.

The course covers the assault cycle, early warning signs, de escalation that works, positional safety, when to withdraw, and what to do afterwards, including reporting that actually happens.

What you will be able to do

  • Recognise the phases of the assault cycle and intervene in the right one
  • Use verbal and non verbal de escalation techniques
  • Position yourself safely and withdraw at the right moment
  • Report and debrief properly, and support a colleague who has been assaulted

Assessment and certificate

Questions

Does this teach restraint or breakaway techniques?

No. Physical intervention and restraint must be taught in person by an accredited trainer under a recognised framework, with regular refreshers. Restraint carries real risk of death, and no online course should claim to teach it.

Do I have to accept aggression as part of the job?

No. Understanding why aggression happens helps you prevent it. It does not oblige you to tolerate assault. Report every incident, including verbal abuse, because under reporting is why staffing and environment problems never get fixed.
