Basic life support
The initial assessment sequence, adult CPR to current Resuscitation Council UK guidance, the recovery position, choking, when and how to use a defibrillator, and what DNACPR decisions mean for the person in front of you.
Why this standard matters in practice
Survival from cardiac arrest falls by roughly ten per cent for every minute without CPR. The person present in those minutes is almost never a doctor; in a care setting it is you.
How it is assessed
The knowledge in this standard is assessed by a knowledge check, which you can take here as part of the Care Certificate course. Attempts are unlimited and marking happens on our servers, so the answers are never sent to the browser.
This standard has a practical half. The knowledge is taught here in full, but the physical technique in this standard has to be observed by a competent assessor in your own workplace, using your own equipment. No online certificate substitutes for that, ours included.
Questions about Standard 12
Can basic life support be trained online?
The knowledge, yes: recognition, the sequence, the reasoning, DNACPR. The technique, no. Compression depth and rate have to be practised on a manikin with feedback, in person, typically annually. Our teaching says this on its face, and a provider selling online only BLS certification is selling something your inspector will not accept.
