The GPhC position statement on AI in pharmacy, explained

Published in April 2026. What the pharmacy regulator expects of professionals, of owners, and at inspection.

Checked against the published sources on 2 October 2026.

The short answer

Pharmacists and pharmacy technicians are personally accountable for their professional practice, even when AI is being used, and AI should not replace clinical decision making and professional judgement. Owners must be able to show due diligence, governance, training and monitoring at inspection. It is not appropriate to use AI to create full revalidation submissions.

Expected of owners

Due diligence that tools are safe, appropriate and used in line with their intended purpose. Clear governance, including risk assessments, data security and confidentiality. Suitable training. Monitoring and review as part of routine quality and risk management.
